In an interview in October 2019 Minister for Prisons and Probation Lucy Frazer QC spoke of the disparity between the government promise of 10000 new prison places at cost of £1.3 billion in 2016 and the promise of the same number of places at a cost of £2.5 billion in 2019. “We are progressing with that, we are making a massive investment” New prisons at Wellingborough and Glen Parva are underway. When asked about the need to provide purposeful activity in prison she acknowledged this was a challenging area. “There is always more we can do” she said. Futures Unlocked would agree that better holistic provision will be the way forward when the new probation regime comes into effect.
